Inkaya Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival


The Inkaya cave is located at the eastern side of Kocadag which is at the west side of Yelki Village of Izmir and the arrival is possible by land cruiser or tractor from Yelki Village to the vicinity of the cave. Then in order to reach the cave it requires a walk of about 20 minutes on a steep slope with scrub.

Properties


The total length of the cave is 222 m. and the deepest point is at -30 m. in respect to the cave entrance. The cave is generally horizontal, partially vertical and dry. The cave temperature is 18ºC at the saloon section and is 22ºC at the final section in October.

It is understood from the potteries found inside of the cave that it was used for settlement in historic periods.

After a steep descend, the cave enlarges into a wide saloon. The width of the saloon is about 20 m. and the height of the ceiling is about 5 m. The passages at the edges of the saloon open into small adorned rooms. The saloon continues southwards through a gallery with an inclined floor. At the end of the gallery, there is a shaft with a depth of 7 m. descending to the final and lowest section of the cave.


Kurudag Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival


The cave is located at the Kurudag locality of Selcuk District.

Properties


The total length of the cave is 42 m and the deepest point is at -22 m. in respect to the cave entrance. The cave has a horizontal and dry characteristic. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than the open air.

The cave had developed in massive dolomitic marbles of Mesozoic age. It has a narrow entrance which afterwards enlarges to 20 m. The length is 41 m. The average height of the ceiling is about 3-5 m. The cave floor inclined northwards is covered with rock blocks and travertine formations. There are stalactites, stalagmites and pillars in the cave, and drapery and flag travertine on the walls.

This cave had also been used as a shelter by humans lived in prehistoric period. Various excavation works has been carried out inside of the cave rich of natural and archeological values. The cave is not reclaimed for tourism yet.
