Turkish State Railways (TCDD) transports people and good over a total railway line of 10,984 kilometers, consisting of 8,697 km of a main line and 2,287 km of secondary lines. 95% of these lines are for single lines. 21% of the lines run on electricity, 24% include signalized system, 4% consists of double line, 3‰ consist of three lines and 1‰ consist of four lines. 26,049,853 people were transported in the year 2004.
TCDD railways are located on the shortest international corridor between Asia and Europe and IV. Pan-European transportation meets with the TCCD railway.
Ankara-Haydarpasa Current Railway Rehabilitation Project, which is considered to enhance the transportation of goods and people by TCDD, was initiated on June 8th, 2003. Once the project is complete, the duration of traveling on the abovementioned line shall be decreased to 3 hours 10 minutes.
TCDD also runs the ports of Haydarpasa, Izmir, Mersin, Iskenderun, Samsun, Bandirma and Derince, which are connected to railway system.
Railway Bosporus Underwater Channel Project, briefly referred as “Marmaray” has been initiated on May 9th, 2004, and construction works began on August 27th, 2004. The project, which will connect Asia and Europe from 58 meters beneath the Marmara Sea, is expected to cost US$2-2,5 billion and be completed in 2008. With the project, the number of people transported between two continents will increase from 10,000 to 150,000 per hour and the share of railway system in public transportation shall reach 27%.
Most of the trains include restaurants and bed wagons and couchettes. Steam wagons also continue transportation, amended and arranged in a comfortable way, to various regions and on several routes as an attraction for tourists. Railway system and metro lines are spreading in urban transportation and becoming more important in transportation sector day by day.
Turkish railways has central railway connection with certain European cities such as Athens, Bucharest, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Venetia, Zurich, Rom Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen and Bratislava, and with Middle Eastern cities such as Tabriz, Tehran, Mosul, Baghdad, Aleppo and Damascus.
Having considered the current administrative potential, railway administrations in countries that are located on the Southern Eurasia corridor (Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan) have gathered under the Economical Cooperation Organization (ECO) and put forward a container train project that shall shuttle between Almaty-Tashkent-Tehran-Istanbul, to establish a railway system to transport goods in an unlimited, modern, fast and safe way.
