Nemrut Lake


This is a fresh water lake in Tatvan-Guroymak region of Bitlis town. This region gained important bird area status with Velvet Scoter and golden eagle.

Appropriate criteria: Bii. B2


Sodali Lake


This is a salt lake in Adilcevaz town of Bitlis. The most important species breeding in this region is gadwall, Red-crested Pochard and white-headed duck.

Appropriate criteria: A1, A4i, Bii, B2


Ercek Lake


This is a salt lake in the centre of Van province. This region gained important bird area status with avocet and Greater Sand Plover. In the region, significant number of Black-necked Grebe and Ruddy Shelduck are observed.

Appropriate criteria: A4i, B1i, B2, B3


Van Lake


This is a region which is formed of the Lake Van and its islands. This region gained important bird area status with marbled duck which incubates in Van sedge, Great Bustard which breeds on the peninsula which is in the east of Sodali Lake, and Van Lake gull which incubates on Ahtamar Island, Carpanak Island, and probably on the other islands. White-winged Black Tern stops over in this region.
