Brief Historical Account
Bodrum is cradle for many civilizations in the history. During centuries, Bodrum, which was recurrently invaded by peoples of Aegean islands, was a significant center for the people that desire to rule the Mediterranean Sea. Karia is located at a small region between Ionia and Likia. Halicarnassus (Bodrum) was one of the important cities of Karia. The historian Herodotus, the first Artemisia I who was the first woman to be a navy admiral and Artemisia II, a navy admiral and artists such as Leachares and Shepas grown in this region.
Bodrum was ruled by the Persians, Macedonians, Roman Empire and Byzantines in the history. The Byzantines lost their sovereignty in Anatolia after it was defeated by Alpaslan, the Seljuk Sultan at Malazgirt in 1071. The Ottoman Sultan, Suleyman the Magnificent who turned the Mediterranean Sea into a Turkish lake, took over Rhodes and Bodrum as a result of Rhodes Campaign in 1552.
Winters are warm and rainy and summers are hot and dry. “Offshore breeze (meltem)” that blows afternoons in summer decreases the effect of hot temperature.
