Dim (Gavurini) Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is situated in the west slope of the Cebireis Mountain (1691 m.) at the region of Kuzkaya Village in the east of Alanya district. Dim Creek Valley is located at 250 m. below, right in front of Dim Cave. Slopes of the valley are covered with pine forest, and the floor with plane trees. People of Alanya use this place as a picnic area. The Dim Creek Valley can be reached via a stabilized road. From there, the cave can be reached by walking on the steep slope in 30 minutes. It takes 50 minutes to arrive the cave from Yaylali Village at the south by walking along the watering channel canalized at the mountain skirts.

Properties

The cave is horizontal and dry with a total length of 357 m. There is a quiet small lake at the end of it. Dim cave is one of the most beautiful caves of Turkey. It is suitable for visits due to its proximity to Alanya and its environment full of picnic areas and forests. The cave was named “Gavurni Cave” by the local people because of the fact that it had been used as a shelter by the people who had lived in prehistoric and historic periods. The approximate temperature inside the cave is between 15ºC and 17 ºC. Beginning from the entrance, the first 75 m. of the cave floor is covered with a thick soil and some blocks of rock. After that section all of the galleries are covered with stalactites of various kinds. There are blocks of rock collapsed from the ceiling all over the middle and left side of the cave floor. The surface of them is adorned with stalagmites and pillars here and there. There are narrow passages in which one can only go ahead by creeping and crawling in the first 75th and 150th m. of the cave. As of the entrance there is a second entry through the ceiling at the 140th m. There are so many bats and grasshoppers inside the cave. Considering from the point of tourism, it can be said that it is the most beautiful cave in Turkey.


Karain Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located within the borders of Yagca Village in a distance of 5-6 km. to the old Antalya-Burdur highway on the 30 km. northwest of Antalya.

Properties:

Karain cave is situated at 150 m. height above the travertine plain lie in front of it, and 430-450 m. above the sea level.

During the period of the beginning of the history of mankind, the cave was consistently occupied by the people of Prehistoric ages such as Lower-Middle-Upper Paleolithic, Neolithic, Calcolithic and First Bronze periods, and of Classical ages. As a natural result of this, it contains an 11 m. thickness of cultural layer. However, the most significant and long-lasting occupation of the cave had appeared in Paleolithic Age.

The cave had been used, rather, as an Offering Cave (temple), in Classical periods. There are some niches and inscriptions in ancient Greek language on the ceiling and exterior walls of the cave. Archeological foundlings obtained from the excavations in Karain Cave are exhibited in Antalya Museum and in Karain Museum nearby the cave.


Cimenici Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

Cimenici Cave is located at the vicinity of Sıhlar (Seyhler in its old name) Village on the southern skirts of Cebireis Mountain in the east of Antalya. It is possible to go to the cave via a stabilized road of 15 km. that branched from Konya-Gazipasa highway in Demirtas Sub district and from there it is at a distance of a short walking. There are historic artifacts that have traces of Romans nearby the cave.

Properties:

The cave is totally horizontal except for a steep ascent. As the thickness of the limestone of which the cave has formed is in a small and limited area, all over the cave is hydrologically dry. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than the open air and the average temperature is around 17ºC-20ºC.

The cave consists of numerous interconnected chambers and two storeys. Initially, it is made up of a single cavity stretching in the direction of east, northeast – west, southwest, and then, being divided by travertine pillars the cave turned out to consist of chambers in the course of time.

The cave proceeds to the second section with a steep ascent of +57 m. Here is +10 m. higher than the entrance and consists of two big chambers. The cave is very rich of travertine deposition. The travertine pillars forming the chambers occupy a large space. Also, the side walls are adorned with drapery travertine.

It’s an interesting cave because of the beauty and the historic artifacts around the vicinity. No written documents were yet found in the cave which was appeared to be used in historic periods.


Damlatas Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located at the coast of the sea within the borders of Alanya district of Antalya Province and it is 3 km. far from the town center.

Properties:

The cave has a total length of 30 m. and it is dry and horizontal. It spreads over an area of 200 m. The cave has a height of 15 m. with its unique panoramic view formed by numerous stalactite and stalagmites. Due to the carbon dioxide gas, high humidity, low temperature and radioactive atmosphere in it, the cave is extremely beneficial for asthmatic patients. Therefore most of the visitor groups are from asthmatic patients. It is estimated that the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave were formed between BC 20.000-15.000 years.


Zeytintası Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located on the south slope of Zeytinlitas Hill at the southeast of Gokceler Ward of Akbas Village that is at 15 km North from Serik district. The cave can be reached by the Urundu-Deniz Tepesi-Kizillar-Gokceler-Akbas road. It has a distance of 54 km to Antalya, 16 km to Serik and 10 km to Aspendos.

Properties:

Formed above a distinct fault line covered by ancient Sura-Kretase limestones, the cave is surrounded by impermeable units both at the bottom and on the sides. The cave has a 14 m. depth and consists of two storeys. The length of the upper storey is 136 m. together with its side halls and lower storey has a length of 97 m. There are many stalactites, stalagmites, pillars and dripstones of all sorts in the cave and their formations are still continuing. Besides, the ponds which are between the big pillars make the view of the cave more interesting. It carries unique characteristics with its macaroni stalactites with a width of 0.03 m and a length of 0.07 m. One can be gaped with astonishment by its unique and untouched environment and its natural beauty. It is quite convenient for tracking, climbing and safari tours as well as photo-safari tours for the wild animals. The location of the cave and its environs has a typical Mediterranean climate, thus all sorts of Mediterranean plants grow here. The air and nature of the place gives you the feeling of tranquility and serenity.


Geyikbayiri Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is in Geyikbayiri Village which is 26 km. far from Antalya. Geyikbayiri Village can be reached via Cakirlar Village at the west of Antalya Province. One can reach the cave by a 5 minutes walking.

Properties:

The cave with a total length of 120 m. has a deepest point of 6.5 m. in respect of the entrance. The cave was found worth for the tourism and the studies are still progressing. The cave generally displays the characteristics of dry and sometimes active cave structure. It is completely dry in summer months. In seasons of precipitation, the floor of the cave is flooded as the floor water level rises. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than the open air in summer. In autumn, it equals with the open air temperature.


Kocain Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is at 45 km. north of Antalya. The cave is reached via Camiliköy and Ahirtas Village road separated from Burdur-Antalya highway.

Properties:

It has the widest entrance and the largest monolithic gallery of Turkey. There is also a cistern left from Roman period in the cave which has pillars of 50-60 m. heights. The width of the entrance of the cave that contains two enormous saloons is 35x70 m.


Konakalti Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located at the cliffed coast of Atatürk Park in Antalya. There is no road that provides arrival to the cave. It can only be entered by seaway.

Properties:

The structure of the cave is horizontal with its 60 m. total length. It can be called as a “marine cave” because of its connection with the sea. There are some ponds in the west saloon because of the sea waves. There are two entrances to the cave; both from the east and from the west. The entrance of the cave is 3 m. above the sea level. The floor of the east partly comes down to the sea level. The east saloon of the cave is completely covered with rock blocks. There are stalactites, stalagmites and pillars in west saloon. The fact that the two little rooms are adorned with travertine and it is right near the edge of the sea increases its touristic value. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than the open air.


Papazkayasi Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located at the edge of the stairs descending down to the sea from the backyard of Antalya City Club.

Properties:

It is at the middle of the travertine step descending down the sea, and has 20 m. height above the sea level. The total length of the cave is 149 m. There is no water or pond in it. The cave had completed its development. The cave floor had become rough, hilly and very narrow in places because of the rock blocks collapsing from the ceiling of the cave. There are little or no stalactite and stalagmites in the cave. There isn’t any air circulation. The Papazkayasi Cave is totally formed among a crack in the direction of north-south. Antalya travertine, exactly related with Cuaterner, has an average thickness of 250-300 m. and it possibly belongs to Pleistocene periods. The cave is located below the coast cliff of 40 m. height.


Yerkopru Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located in the centre of Antalya. It is easy to reach the cave.

Properties:

The cave, with a total length of 110 m. has the deepest point at 27 m. in respect to the cave entrance. The cave had completed its development. It can be called as a “marine cave” because of its connection with the sea. The cave is dry. The saloon floor that has a connection with the sea is partially covered with the sea water. The temperature of the cave is cooler than the open air.

Yerkopru Cave is totally in Antalya travertine at the direction of east-west. It is formed as the result of the fact that the ceiling of a cave with a minimum length of 150 m. in the beginning had collapsed.


Altinbesik Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located at the western slope of the deep end steep Manavgat Valley at the east of Urunlu Village in Ibradi Quarter of Akseki District in Antalya. The roads are asphalt up to Ibradi. The road between Ibradi and Urunlu is stabilized. The cave can be reached by an hour of walking along a 5 km. pathway from the village towards Manavgat Stream.

Properties:

The highest point of the cave with a total length of 2500 m. is +101 m. It is a horizontal and partially active cave. The researchable section of the cave is 2200 m. together with its branches. As the lower and medium levels of the cave are sometimes active, a lot of ponds are formed at the dry seasons, too. The upper level is always dry. The air of the cave is very humid and the average temperature is around 16-18ºC. No animal groups drawing attention are encountered.

Altinbesik Cave is one of the most beautiful caves of Turkey. The karstic topography of the environment and the pine forests creates an enchanting panoramic view. The cave is at the exit end of a very long and big underground system. This big system pulling Kizilova, Kambos and Sobucesuyu ends at the Altinbeşik-Dudensuyu Cave under the Oruc Doline Cave. Therefore, this underground water system with a length of 100 km. air distance is one of the longest and biggest karst systems of the world.

Big rock blocks are interesting at the high levels of the cave which completely loose its activity. Furthermore, there are also stalactite and stalagmites. The first 200 m. starting from the cave entrance forms the lower level and is permanently under the water. At the end of the lower level, there is a steep climb of 40 m. This climb and adjacent walls are covered with thick white travertine. Here is the most beautiful section of the cave. It is convenient to enter the cave only in summer and autumn months. Intensive water discharges occur in winter and spring.


Koca Doline Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is located at the southwest edge of the Akseki Polje. The pathway separated from the 4th km of Akseki-Bucakkisla road passing by the very edge of the cave.

Properties:

Although the cave is horizontal in places, it mostly develops vertically and goes down up to 155 m. in the form of stairs. Koca Doline which drains the surface waters of Akseki Polje river basin is developed above an important fault line among the Upper Creates Limestone. Koca Doline in which holds numerous lakes, ends with a closed siphon.


Beldibi Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave located right after the Camdag tunnel exit at the 40th km of the coastal highway between Antalya-Kemer, is an under-rock shelter. It is at the locality of Oba village.

Properties:

The cave is at 25 m. height from the coast and is in the shape of a shelter. As the cave is damaged largely by natural destruction, the filling layers in it are floated by the rain waters and winds. All of the 6 layers containing Mesolotic cultures were determined. In the excavations, Flintstones tools belonging to Upper Paleolithic and Mesolotic periods were obtained. Also, there are schematic drawings of human, mountain goat and deer on the walls of this under-rock shelter. The cave is a protected archeological area in which the local and foreign tourists are always free to enter.


Kucukdipsiz Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

It is located at the southern slope of Alakaya Hill (661m.) which is the extension of Tunek Hill (618m.) towards southwest.

Properties:

The structure of the cave is dry and horizontal and the total length of it is 74 m. The deepest point of the cave is 27.5 m. in respect to the entrance. After a narrow entrance, the cave continues towards the northwest with an approximate inclination of 25º. The frequency of travertine stalactites and stalagmites are increased towards the end of the cave. As the karstic floor water left at higher parts, the cave is always dry. Inside the cave is cooler than the open air. While the temperature of the open air is 20ºC outside, it is 17ºC at the far end of the cave.


Büyük Dipsiz Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is located at the south slope of Alakaya Hill (661 m.) which lies in the west of Antalya Harbor at the 3 km. southwest of Tunek Hill.

Properties:

The cave with a total length of 40 m. has a deepest point at 29 m. in respect to the cave entrance. As the karstic floor water is located at the above storeys, the cave is dry. Inside the cave is cooler than the open air. At the beginning of November, the temperature inside the cave is 17ºC., while it is 20ºC at outside.

The cave is formed between the Cretase aged residual limestone and the conglomerate limestone formations of the same age, which is situated just below the former. After a narrow entrance, the cave proceeds towards north with an average declination of 25º.


Derya Cave


Geographical Location and Access

The cave is located inside of the Atatürk Park which is situated between the Konyaalti Street and the coast.

Properties:

The total length of the cave is 124 m. and the deepest point is at 35.65 m. in respect to the entrance. The cave is vertical. As the south edge of the cave is inside the sea, it could be named as "marine cave". The cave is dry and had completed its development. The sections of the cave, which are at the sea, are covered with the semi-salted sea water.

There is a small amount of stalagmites and wall travertine that developed at the grand hall, but the amount of stalagmites and stalactites increases towards the south. In this section, sweet water springs gush out of cracks and mix with the sea water. There is a second entrance at 40 m. west of the main entrance. The entrance seems like an enlarged crack with a width of 0.5 m. and a length of 1 m. The air inside is relatively cooler than the open air in summer months.


Mahrumcali Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is situated in Mahrumcali Quarter at the east of Gebecek village at the northeast of Manavgat. It is easy to arrive the cave.

Properties:

The total length of the cave is 157 m. and the deepest point is at -36 m. in respect to the entrance. The cave is semi horizontal and semi active. Water flows into the cave only in the seasons of precipitation. The temperature of the cave is around 16-18ºC in summer months.

Geology-Geomorphology: The cave is developed at the joining point between the Cebireis formation and the Mahmutlar formation which is below it. The cave is inside the dolomithic limestone and over the micaschist layers and it dives towards the south in concordance with the declination of both layers with an angle of 15º.


Peynirlidag Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is situated at the Gedelme Plateau locality. There is a road connecting Kemer district to Gedelme plateau. The cave entrance can be reached by walking for approximately 4 minutes from the village center. There is a historic wall and ruins left from Byzantium Empire at 65 m. north of the cave.

Properties:

The total length of the cave is 74 m. and the deepest point is at -19 m. in respect to the entrance. The cave is dry and is mostly vertical. Most of the cave is dry. There is merely a small lake at the end and at the deepest point of the cave. The temperature of the cave is 17ºC in autumn. As the cave entrance is large, the temperature changes dependent on the conditions of open air.

The stalactites, stalagmites and pillars developed inside the cave. The surroundings of natural beauties and historic ruins make the cave more attractive.


Tilkiler Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is located within the area of Oymapinar Dam at Manavgat District of Antalya Province.

Properties:

The cave has developed horizontally and is an active cave with a total length of 7 m. The water level inside the cave rises in spring.

The cave had been discovered after a natural gallery is encountered in one of the injection galleries which were found during the preliminary studies on cave dam. Because of the fact that the cave has been developed inside of the Conglomerate, it has significant scientific value.


Aslanli (Yaren) Cave


Geographical Location and Arrival

The cave is situated in the Yayla locality of Kirazli Village in Manavgat District of Antalya. It requires a 30 minute walking in order to reach Aslanli Cave, starting from Derebogazı locality which is on the 3rd km. of Kirazli-Kusadasi road.

Properties:

The cave with a total length of 110 m. is partially horizontal, partially vertical. It is a dry cave. The temperature is 18ºC in October.

The cave has developed inside the dolomithic marble of Mesozoic age and over a large fault line. After a steep downwards descent of 6 m., the cave descends towards the west along a big fault line roughly in the direction of east-west, with an angle of 26º. After 40th m. it enlarges and it looks like a saloon whose floor is inclined. The floor of the saloon is covered with muddy ground and rock blocks collapsed from the ceiling. The stalactites and stalagmites formed drapery and flag travertine onto the walls. The name of the cave comes from one of the stalagmites, which looks like a sitting lion.
