In terms of the seas it houses, its fishing resources and the fertility of these resources, Turkey has a significant role within the Mediterranean Marine System including the Black Sea.. It has an important place in the countries that have a coast to the Mediterranean with 27 percent of all the fishing activities being carried out in Turkey.

It has been found out that 150 species of fish live in the Black Sea, 200 in the Marmara Sea, 300 in the Aegean Sea and 285 in the Mediterranean. The total of the fish species that exist in our seas is about 350. Some of the fish in the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas came and settled in our seas from the Indian Ocean after the Suez Canal was opened in 1876. There are, on the other hand, 192 fish species living in our internal waters.
